English Poetry Last year our very own Ms Avis was asked by members of the Totnes Library to take some of the amazing creative writing work from KEVICC and display it at what they hoped would become an annual 'Write Now Festival' in Totnes... Auntie Jo by Rosa Risebero When a leaf drops, or a heart stops, when her eyes shut, a film cuts, although she isn’t here today, we all think of those and they, some wish they’re here right now, but go on take a bow, to the people who have lost someone, to the people who have no family none, when a tear drops for those who leave, we are left behind all to grieve. For Ruby by Harula Ladd Page 11 A year ago, Imet Harula Ladd, a local poet, and shewrote an incredibly lovely 3minute poem for me. I have remained in touch with her and she offered to visit KEVICC and do some '3 minute poetry'. We held a Google Meet and she had a session with my Year 7 and 8 classes. Ever since we have been sending Harula a ‘poem of the week’ for display in Castle Books in Totnes.Herearesomeofour students' experienceof thesessionandRosa'spoemof theweek... Ms Avis, English Teacher Having Harula in was inspiring. She gave me a new insight into poetry. She has incredible speed when it comes to poetry; you say a few things and then bam, you’ve got a poem! She has amazing ideas. I said that Poppy was small, likes to bake and is a big hamster! She wrote a page poem just based on that. She basically flipped a three minute timer and then just wrote for three minutes straight. She also wrote her ideas on a flip pad. It was a bit weird because it was over Zoom but overall it was a fun experience. Tilly Brudenell Having Harula in with us was amazing and very inspiring. She has given me an entirely new perspective of poetry. She is impeccable with time, when writing a poem all she has to do was to be given some words to describe myself, which Tilly gave, then she turned over an egg timer and got to work. It took her 3 minutes to write a 4 verse poem which was fantastic. She has amazing ideas and her talents are indescribable. She wrote things like I was small and loved to bake. It was awonderful experience, despite the fact that it was on Google Meet. I would love to do this again because I loved the experience and it gave me an amazing insight in to the world of poetry.
