KEVICC Courier Winter 2021 Lockdown
The KEVICC Reading Canon Books To Inspire Us All The KEVICC Canon is a list of books recommended by our learning community. Students, parents, carers, teachers, governors and librarians have all contributed. These books provide an eclectic selection of voices, perspectives and genre, and will serve as an excellent springboard for further reading. The Canon is intended to be a living list and we will update and review annually. We hope there is something to ignite a spark in every young person and we are happy to listen to those who wish to make suggestions for its future. The list exists both to serve our students and because of them. The lack of diversity in the GCSE syllabus is an issue we attempt to address in the KEVICC canon by consciously including a range of voices and perspectives representative of modern British society. Students will find many titles by black andminority ethnic writers, andmanymore by revered female authors, illuminating the diversity of our literary heritage. Parents, please engage with the books; feel free to read them yourself and decide whether they are suitable for your child. These books can start conversations and perhaps even make a difference in the lives of teens. Although some of the stories might be challenging or even upsetting, they deal with important issues for our time. Some explore adult, sensitive or current themes that resonate with our young adults. It is a way to equip them with empathy, life skills and resilience needed for the society in which we live. Anne Law Assistant Principal Page 23
