KEVICC Courier Winter 2021 Lockdown

Reading for Pleasure Page 8 Let’s face it, Lockdown is boring. We can’t do what we want to, we miss our friends and it’s always raining. It’s definitely time to try something different. After all, reading is a wonderful way of escaping the here and now and transporting you somewhere different. Whether you are an avid reader, have lost your readingmojo or have never been keen, the KEVICC Canon has something for you. The canons (one for years 7 and 8 and another for years 9 to 13) are designed to draw together book recommendations from across our learning community. They include different genres, different levels of challenge and length. The books also cover a diverse range of authors, representing the true range of people in society. (Not just the dead white men focused on in the GCSE syllabus.) Once you have read a Canon book, write a short review, along with your name and year group, onto a piece of paper, and drop it into the library when you return (or email it to us during lockdown). Those reviews will be entered into a prize draw to win a £20 Amazon voucher. If you need a further incentive, the library will soon be launching a brand new challenge where points will make prizes. Make a note of the Canon books you have read over lockdown and bag yourself some easy points. But don’t just take our word for it, take a look at the reviews below. If you want to get in touch with us just email librarians@kingedwardvi.devon.sch.uk Looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you againsoon in the library. Keri Bingham and Jess Schnoor School Librarians A Hello from Our New Librarians Above : Ms Blunt took this photo of her Christmas reading pile, featuring many titles from our canon. Above : Staff Canon Reading Challenge winner and KEVICC resident Dave the Cat (standing in for Ruth Long ) and the winning title - Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. As the winner of our staff reading competition, Ruth Long wrote this review of Chinua Achebe's powerful novel. • It is very evocative; you can really imagine yourself living in a completely different culture in West Africa rather than in wintry England. • It is straightforward in style and the plot is gripping so quite easy to read • It is thought-provoking about colonialism, religion, gender roles and the relationship between our individual lives and changes in the wider community • It's not too long (Mr Salt prefers to read short books!) Things Fall Apart A Review Above : For those worried about Dave and how she has been in the particularly cold weather of late, please rest easy. Dave has enjoyed holidaying at Mrs Long's house (often in the bed!) over lockdown.
