Courier Summer 2021

Page 11 Through the MaryLidstoneCharitableTrust , our Kennicott Sixth Form are able to apply for and receive financial support for Higher and Further Education courses once they leave us. The Trust was set up following a generous legacy from Roy Lidstone and is dedicated to the memory of his wife, Mary. Family circumstances meant neither Roy nor Mary were able to pursue their education beyond the age of sixteen; it was always their wish that their legacy should be used to enable young people to follow their academic dreams. Grants are awarded up to a maximum level of £5,000 per year of a supported course: i.e. a three year degree course could see support of up to a maximum £15,000 awarded over the three years. My name is Laurie. I was a student at Kennicott up until the Summer of 2020. My time at Kennicott was a momentous experience. The Sixth Form has a great atmosphere and a top group of unstoppable teachers. I thank all my teachers for supporting me so warmly and, despite it being an unsettled year due to Covid, I had a great time and came out with great grades ( A* Product Design, B English Lit, D* Music BTEC ). As an applicant to the Mary Lidstone Trust I am ecstatic to have been granted it! Their financial support will be invaluable for my years ahead at The University of Bristol . The Mary Lidstone Trust is a truly fantastic and unique opportunity for any KEVICC student, I would highly recommend applying for it if you are at Kennicott or if you are planning to attend. Empowering Our Students Here & Beyond Laurie Cox University of Bristol Jasmine Leete Portsmouth University My experience at Kennicott Sixth Form has been nothing but positive. The staff at Kennicott have been supportive throughout the entirety of my time at the school. Even throughout the first and second lockdown teachers were very supportive and made the transition from school to distanced learning as easy as possible, also upon returning to school after both lockdowns. I would like to highlight Amy Withers as someone who had a major impact on my entire experience at Kennicott. She made it possible for me to manage my disability (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) alongside my schoolwork in a way that I am extremely grateful for. From the amazing support I received at Kennicott, I am going to be studying International Development with Languages, at the University of Portsmouth , starting in September 2021. This course entails multiple disciplines, including economics, politics, human geography and international relations. The language that I will be choosing for my course is Mandarin Chinese, I believe this will be very useful in the future, especially in the context of my other modules. The Mary Lidstone Trust has given me an amazing gift, of not only the funds to help me through university, but also the acknowledgement of my hard work and enthusiasm for education. The funds will mean I can afford the basic needs of university life, for example accommodation and meals, but will also aid in my 3rd year studying in China, which I know will be a very important learning experience for me in many ways. I am very thankful to the whole of KEVICC, Kennicott and the Mary Lidstone Trust for supporting me during secondary school and beyond. #TheSchoolForTotnes
