KEVICC Courier Spring

Year 7 STEM Club Over the Autumn and Spring Terms a small team have been developing concepts linked to biomimicry and bio- morphism. Students have collectively produced to central ideas that they are continuing to explore. The first is to develop a solar and wind generated power system that provides free electricity in the college dining area for students to charge their mobile devices. However the students were keen to explore how the system could be used to develop social interaction, empathy and understanding. Through observing other student behaviours in the dining area they felt that they wanted to get students to interact more face to face, rather than ‘Face Time’. The team want to offer free electricity to charge but not us in this context, thus encouraging communication through direct social interaction. The second brief students have developed has a local commercial feel and revolves around the idea of making products more sustainable. As a region where there is a dependence on tourism and our link to the sea and water courses, students have decided to develop eco-friendly crabbing and fishing lines for use at several local locations, including Stoke Gabriel pond, Brixham and Torquay. Their designs aim to replace the plastic handles, nylon lines and bagged products already available. Instead students have developed a range of ideas that would appeal to young children from laserable plywood, old coffee sacks/sisal bags and natural or biodegradable line. Students will be presenting their designs at the Regional Big Bang Event in June and it is hoped that the end products can be sold to raise money for other STEM initiatives and to pay the young designers. Each year the Design & Technology Department celebrate the creativity, ingenuity and hard work of the students that study Design & Technology. The work of students from Year 7 to Year 13 will again this year be on exhibition in May in the Ariel Gallery. These images show emerging and developing pieces that will be part of the exhibition and we hope you are able to come and visit.
