KEVICC Courier Spring

P.E. Page 29 It has been some time since we hosted a sixth form basketball fixture against another school but the boys pictured above were keen to make this happen. They started training on a Wednesday after school back in October under the guidance of both Ross Draper and Jonny Evans in Year 13 and have very much looked forward to playing some competitive games against local schools. We started with a game against TA on 14 Jan at KEVICC, which was both an exciting and nervous experience as this was their first ever competitive game as a sixth form team. In the first quarter they took time to settle losing 14-6 but momentum changed in both the second and third quarters where they managed to come out on top at 13-12 and 15-6 respectfully. Adrenaline pumping they were ready for the stand off in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately despite having the opportunities we just couldn't quite find the basket but the opposition did and we lost the quarter 15-6 bringing the total for the game to a loss of 43-37. From the musings of the much loved Kobe Bryant 'learn from failures and be driven to keep going'. You either win or you learn; the boys had a great time playing this game together and will take the experience forward into their next fixture. Carly Perring Sixth Form Basketball This is the very first time that KEVICC has been represented at the Devon Schools Ski Championships. The event was held at Torquay Alpine Ski Club in November. Twelve year old Manu Rees-Durham, who is a keen skier but had never participated in a ski race before, competed in the U14 Novice category, which involved two timed runs on the same course against 20 other competitors. Manu came an amazing 3rd place, winning the bronzemedal. We hope to see Manu take part in next year’s competition and see if we can encourage more skiers to join him for the schools team event. Manu Rees-Durham Bronze medallist at the Annual Devon Schools Ski Championship s Tap Dance World Championships Mackenzie Cockburn on his Team GB Gold winning story Before Christmas, my sister (Tianna) and I went with Team GB to Germany to compete in the tap dance world championships, representing Great Britain. It was an amazing experience but by far the most tiring of my life. We auditioned in June for a Formation group and I also wanted to do a Solo performance. In the end, I was offered a Solo, a Duo, a Trio & the Formation group, which I accepted happily. I really didn’t know how hard it was going to be. The run up to the competition involved hours of training (in Swindon and at home) with shouting and swearing, but once we were in Germany it was worth it. On the first day of the team being there, the competition hadn’t started so we spent the whole day from 11am to 11pm rehearsing. The next couple of days were the quarters and semi-finals of my dances and I got through to the finals on all of them!!! This also included the Formation group. By the end of the week we were World Champions (Tianna as well) with a gold medal in the Formation group category. That is the one every country really wanted to win. I also came 2nd (Silver) in my Solo and received Bronze medals for 3rd in my Duo and Trio competitions. Four events: four medals which I don’t think is too bad for my first time competing against the best in the world. Overall, it was a great learning experience and it improved my skills a lot. Now, I am hoping to go back at the end of this year to make it a Gold and become the best in the World as a solo performer. Look out Czech Republic!! Photos on the next page.
