Students in GCSE Product Design and Btec
Art & Design have been exploring casting and
moulding techniques that are used in industry
and at The Totnes Foundry.
The project has been funded by Devon County
Council’s 'Enterprise in Schools' Grant, awarded
earlier in the year to develop these techniques
in schools. Students have developed patterns
to create heat-proof silicon moulds using the
College’s three-dimensional printing systems.
Two-part moulds were made of each design by
students, and then the pattern was removed,
and riser and pourer channels were cut in place.
Students then cast their ideas in pewter using
gravity feed. The project also incorporated a visit
to the Totnes Foundry where many of the same
techniques were seen being deployed.
This project has already had a significant
impact on other students, both in College and
within the community. Two Year 8 students, for
example, developed their passion for archery by
developing new arrowhead profiles that were 3D
printed, moulded and then cast in metal.
The idea of developing arrowheads as a project
has been the basis of a future proposal for applying for funding in conjunction with the Dartington Estate’s Deer Park Project.
Members of the College’s Fab Lab that meet every Tuesday have explored the potential of the silicon moulding materials
to reduce engine vibration on large scale remote-controlled model boats. It’s planned that these techniques will become
embedded in the shape of the KEVICC curriculum, and that the materials and resources facilitated with the 'Enterprise in
Schools' Grant that Devon County Council awarded, are shared with other centres in Devon. David Irish, Team Leader of D&T

Liquid Metal Ideas
The Foundation students are entering the final stage of their
one-year diploma course in Art and Design, and are preparing
work and studio spaces as they embark on their Final Major
Project. This will embrace and explore their chosen pathway
and the resulting work will be showcased in the Foundation
studios, open to the public
from 20 –25 June, later this
summer. Having received
one-to-one tutorials, advice
and mock interviews, a large
percentage of students
have already secured their
places on prestigious degree
courses, amongst these
are Birmingham, Brighton,
Bristol, Nottingham Trent
and Wimbledon, as well
as Falmouth with whom
our
Foundation
course
has a unique Progression
Partner agreement. To show
solidarity with Foundation
students, and for their own
good practice, our Artists in
Residence will also show their work as part of the summer
exhibition. Molly Lemon, who has a degree in printmaking
fromWinchester, ispicturedtriallingaprintmakingtechnique
known as 'Press' printing. This is a great opportunity for
her to explore and share with Foundation students new
techniques, and the results will form part of her contribution
to the summer shows.

Banners project
Last year KEVICC students were asked to produce some
banners for Harbertonford Village Hall to brighten and make
cheery a rather drab staging area of Harbertonford Village
Hall. Wendy Newman, leader of the ‘Murals’ activity during
our Summer Activity Week decided to incorporate this
commission into her group's task and, over the two day
workshop, they designed, created and cut stencils and finally
printed the series of beautiful screen-printed hangings for
the Hall.
Jackie Clayton, who offered us this commission, writes:
We had a function at the hall on Saturday and apparently
several guests commented on the difference the backdrops
make to the appearance of the whole hall. Thank you so
much for your input. From what was almost a throw-away
request last summer, you and the students have given us a
creation to be proud of that will enhance the hall for many
years to come.
Well done to those participating students:
