In College grants:
Students from lower income families can qualify for 50%
of costs of PE kit, trips and music tuition up to a certain
amount. Trips ranging from the Okehampton residential
to visiting London or New York become more available,
and allow the College to offer a wide spectrum of school
trips for all students, and give real choices. These awards
total around £25,000 each year.
Individual awards:
Any student, or ex-student before their 25th birthday,
may apply for an award for an educational purpose.
The conditions and application forms can be found on
the College website under Foundation Governors. The
awards sub-committee meets twice a term to consider
requests. Priority is given to need, and to those requests
which provide a social benefit to others, as well for an
individual's education. Requests must be supported
by a reference. Applicants who are working towards a
coaching qualification, or who will represent the county
or country received awards. Design & Technology exam
students have had awards for their creative, thought-
provoking and socially-aware projects. Ex-students have
been given awards for volunteering in India, Honduras
and Nepal, also with MSc placements in China or with
graduate shows. A student starting an apprenticeship
could receive help with tools and equipment.
More details can be found on the College website, along
with application forms for current and past students.
KEVICC has had Foundation Governors since 1923 and
staff, students and their families are very conscious of
the privilege of being able to apply for this funding, and
are grateful for all the time our Foundation Governors
give so willingly to the College.
Who are the KEVICC Foundation Governors
~ and what do they do?
The Foundation Governors are the trustees of an
educational charitable trust which funds projects in
the College which cannot be funded elsewhere. It also
gives grants to students to Year 13 and can make awards
to ex-students up to their 25th birthday. There are 12
Trustees, 4 Devon County Council appointees, 4 Totnes
Town Council appointees and 4 more co-opted members.
All the trustees have an interest in the College and
education; many have family connections with KEVICC –
they or their children or grandchildren attended KEVICC.
The Trust has invested funds, and some property, which
produces an annual income. It is the duty of the trustees
to distribute the income on educational activities for
which provision is not made by public funds and to
support individual students and ex-students. They do
not make policy, but work to add educational provision.
What does the Foundation fund?
Funds are divided between grants towards helping
departments enhance provision to students with
equipment, projects or partnerships, and those to
students past and present.
Departmental awards:
In the last 5 years the trust has funded 33 areas of
the College. Some examples are: the 3D printer and
the new laser cutter for Design Technology and top
of the range equipment for Media Studies, Science,
Photography, Textiles and PE. ITC and Maths have had
large investments. Funding has been given towards a
minibus; Ten Tors equipment; art residences; activities
week; literacy and accelerated reading; dance, sports and
drama partnerships. The annual total is from £30,000 to
£55,000. There are funds earmarked for special projects
like the new football pitch and some funding for the All
Weather Pitch.
