Gifted & Talented students visit the University of Bath
Four of our most talented athletes in Year 10 – Ewan Baker, Libby
Daymond, Lewis Dennis and Teya Sheppard – were the students from
KEVICC who, together with other members of the Dartmoor School Sport
Partnership (South Dartmoor and Newton Abbot College), spent a day at
the University of Bath. They took part in four different activities:
Firstly the students were taken on a tour of the University's sports
facilities. This was a real eye-opener for the students, not only seeing
the quality of facilities available to students but also the number of GB
and professional athletes just wandering around the campus inbetween
training sessions.
The next session was taken by Corinne Yorston when she and her team
put the students through a number of tests to measure acceleration,
speed, agility, power, upper body strength and balance. The students
were all given their own detailed results, and a comparison between
their results and the national average.
Next, the students
took part in a sprinting
training session where
they did a number
of different activities
looking at correct
running style and how
to extract every bit
of speed from their
bodies.
Finally, the students
went into a lab where
one student ran on
a treadmill for as long as they possibly could whilst hooked up to a
number of machines to test for VO2 max, blood lactose and heart rate
amongst others. The students were then able to look at these results to
determine a number of things. The day was a huge success for all as
students left with not only a better understanding of themselves, but
also what it really takes to become an elite athlete. Many of them also
left inspired by what they had seen throughout the day. Carly Perring
Flag Football at KEVICC
This year has seen the PE department
extended the range of activities in the
curriculum after students were given the
opportunity to take part in a game called
flag football. This is ultimately a tag version
of American Football. The students have
loved playing and have picked up a whole
new range of skills due to lessons. There
are even American footballs appearing on
the tennis courts at beak and lunchtimes!
After the introduction of an extra-curricular
club, it is definitely a growing sport here
at KEVICC and one that we are very much
embracing.

The following

Kingsbridge Community College: Huw Paige,
Jack Gapper, Luke Whiley, Alfie Annear and
Luca Devere-Smith. They were all successful
in being selected and will represent this area
at The Devon Youth Games in Okehampton on
Sunday 3rd July. A very big congratulations
to all 5 !

A mixed Hockey Team
comprising
of students from years 9,10,11 and 13
played the first Mixed Hockey Fixture for
many a year at Kingsbridge C.C. in March.
Hopes ran high when we went 1-0 up after
10 mins (Jack Connabeer following up a
shot fromMackenzie) but KCC were quick to
equalise. The rest of that half was end-to-
end play, with both Goalkeepers kept busy.
Five minutes into the 2nd half, KEVICC went
ahead again (Jack Connabeer's 2nd after
some fantastic team play from Defence)
but, once again, KCC were quick to equalise.
A draw would have been a fair result, as
both teams played some excellent exciting
hockey but, with seconds to go, a powerful
shot from KCC hit the post and ricocheted
off the back of an unsighted goalies' pad –
the ball fumbled over the line and into the
goal! A bitter pill to take, but still a fantastic
game to remember for the supportive team
spirit and genuine fun had by all.
