There was an amazingly
positive response
to recent events
from students with
a 'Hope, not Hate'
boat and display
in the College – the boat itself, and its messages, were
part of a Totnes Citizenship refugee awareness event, which, at
the suggestion of students, was extended to include deeply-felt
messages after the murder of MP Jo Cox. Organised by Psychology
teacher Philippa Hurst, students were invited to choose an origami flower; write a message of hope on it and then to place
it in the boat. It has been suggested that the boat moves on from school to school around the country, eventually making
its way to Jo Cox's constiruency. It leaves us to go to Dartington Primary, and then to another school in Cornwall next week.
This has been a very positive message in difficult times.
IN or OUT ??
There was a real buzz around
the College about the Referendum and
it was fantastic to see so many of our
students engaged with the political
process. Because we had exams, we
could not set up a separate polling area.
However, tutors set up designated spaces
in their classrooms, cupboards and
corridors so that students had a sense of
what a real vote was like.

Stop Press!
Students of KEVICC voted resoundingly to remain in the EU.
The vote was split 73% remain; 27% leave, with the split at Sixth Form being even greater: 93% remain; 7% leave.
We also had a debate the day before,
which was really well attended. Opposing
panels of mixed year 10s and 12s led
an informative and lively event. The
students did themselves proud; their
understanding of the issues was superb
and the questions from the audience
were both challenging and enlightening;
very revealing of the concerns that our
young people have. Natalie Clark, PSHE
Year 10 students recently went
on a trip to London to see
The
Threepenny Opera
by Bertold
Brecht and Kurt Weill. This is a new
adaptation, staged at The National
Theatre. As part of a Drama GCSE
course, it is a requirement to see
a live performance – the students
learn the skills of deconstructing
and reviewing professional theatre
as a part of their written coursework.
They were expected to complete
a 2000 word review upon their
return from seeing the show, which
then feeds directly into their GCSE
assessment.
