Glenda Penrice and
Miss 'Peggy' Penhale
The Trust Board has been considering how the Trust can
support and recognise the work of our growing number of
Young Co-operatives. In the new year, Trust members will
be interviewing students who apply for the new 'Young
Co-operatives Leadership' award and a presentation
evening for students achieving the award is planned for
Wednesday 25 March 2015.

In September we held our informal reunion in London where the
gathering was small but with a good lunch and conversation, and those
present covering a very wide age group. Miss Margaret ‘Peggy’ Penhale,
who left school in 1945, attended the College earlier in the year with our
Secretary and presented vouchers to Mrs Glenda Penrice for distribution
to achievers in each year group within the SEN Department.
Those nominated for prizes were:
Year 7: Adam Knapman & Mei Pratt-Johns
Year 8: Isaac Miles & Ffion Shore
Year 9: George Wright-Collins & Niamh Ross
Year 10: Charlie Thomas & Delphi Gray-Davies
Year 11: Vincent Heath & Lucy Homer.
Congratulations to all.
The members again held their AGM at the Royal Seven Stars Hotel,
Totnes where there was a good gathering of members, families and
friends. We held a moment of silence and reflection to remember six of
our members who had passed away during the past year, including our
most senior member Professor Henry Maddick, who had been at school
from 1923 to 1931.
The Society appointed a new President –Niall R Whitehouse, who was at
KEVICC from 1985 to 1992. Niall is a Lt. Commander in the Royal Navy,
working with helicopters, both in flying and engineering. He has been
awarded many commendations and medals recognising his service in
many conflicts. Niall is married with a young daughter and tells us that
he is soon due to be posted again but this time flying a desk!
This year marking the 100th Anniversary of the commencement of the
WW1 has resulted in many enquiries to search the archives for details
of ‘old boys’ who were involved in the conflict and made the ultimate
sacrifice. Most enquiries have come from villages where research is
being carried out into names on their war memorials. One such name
was Second Lieutenant G T Butcher and we were able to supply a lot of
information about this young man who was at the Grammar School from
1901 to 1910. We even found a picture of him in the 1903 cricket team.
Although we remember the past, we very much like
to support the future and are here to help and support
current students and staff where we can. Why not join
us as a member when you leave KEVICC and continue
to be a part of the ‘family’? Texts, Facebook and
Twitter, although wonderful, will never replace human
contact and face-to-face conversation. For further
information about your Alumni, please contact

The first four students the Mary Lidstone Trust has been able to support have now all
started their degree studies, helped by receiving the first instalment of their grant award
towards the cost. We are delighted to be able to support the following four students:
Amelia Durbin, studying a BEd in Primary Education at Plymouth University
Claire Lester, studying a BA in Business and Law at Bristol, University of the West of
England
Christina Sims, studying a BA honours degree in Filmmaking at Kingston University
Amy Wilde, studying a BA honours degree in Photography at Falmouth University
Each student will be providing information back to the Trustees about their progress and
we verymuch hope that they are each enjoying the start of their higher education studies.
Applications for the new round of grants (for support from September 2015 onwards)
have now been received and the Trustees are about to consider those applications and to
interview the candidates.

This new award is designed to recognise the range of
skills developed by students in their Young Co-operative
activities and will, we hope, become an annual event. All
members will be invited to the event alongside parents
and carers of the students receiving awards.
