Dave Tellam memorial football match
Dave Tellam, Head of Year and Ceramics Teacher at KEVICC,
always promoted African charities and, in his memory, the
annual College v Staff match took and honoured his name and
charity appeal on an annual basis. Dave loved quirky; admired
energy and commitment; promoted skill and expertise and
enjoyed a good jape ... well, dear reader, if ever a game epito-
mised his spirit, this has it. This match had an abundance of
all of those qualities bar one ... and those present will know which one (or two!!)
were missing!! The game was a fierce contest played in a very Corinthian spirit,
especially when Mr 'Nick or Derek' Chilton tried to see if students could fly. A
very generous referee overlooked his timing issues; he has been out of practice
for the past three years! The energy of youth was countered by the experience
and know-how of
the seasoned PE
quartet of Gillard,
Collins, Beynon
and Trent – who
covered
every
blade of grass by
their footprints or
by rolling others
into position. The initial score of a shot from the Kennicott Captain hitting the
post seemed to galvanise the staff team who dressed and played like Brazil!
Time ticked on and the staff remained resolute, only to be suckered into a set
piece goal from Joe Souch, which forced extra time. The capacity crowd won-
dered if skill, experience, jogging and pointing might overcome energy, youth,
sprinting and running and, as ever, it did!! Within minutes of extra time left,
the staff were still full of running, having reduced the game to a ten-a-side due
to childcare issues. Sadly, the staff in defence had no such child care issues
but, with moments to go, Mr Trent – where had he been all game?? – burst
through a tired back two to slot in number three and give the men in yellow
their third win on the trot. An excellent game finished with the cup presented;
pictures taken; shirts nearly swapped and memories banked for a life time.
The small victory the College enjoyed in seeing twelve grown men stagger
around the site for the next two days did not make up for the defeat but the
spirit, commitment, japes and quirkness will be admired and enjoyed by all
for another season!

Boys from year 8 and 9 were selected
to participate in the Devon Winter
Games this term. This is an annual
event held at Exeter University. Both
the Table Tennis and Volleyball teams
had to qualify to get to the event
which suggested the calibre of com-
petition would be high.
Once the games began, it wasn’t long
before our Table Tennis players began
to dominate the group they had been
placed in. TomHaggerty was perform-
ing very well, showing why he has
fast become a leading player in the
County. Meanwhile, in the Volleyball
Hall, the teams started off with high
hopes after a very positive training
regime with Miss Perring. The Volley-
ball players were in good company,
as they had a British Olympian, Zara
Dampney, present to offer any help or
guidance, or to simply have a selfie!
Overall, the boys had a great day
with the Table Tennis team finishing
4th and the Volleyball team finishing
10th.
Devon Winter Games
In May year 9 students set off on
the annual Weymouth soccer tour.
After an early weary-eyed start, we
set off and arrived just in time for a
quick warm-up before the first big
game of the weekend. This fixture
was against Tring Tornadoes who
were a very strong and physical
team that were managed by the
former International football referee
Graham Poll. The 0-0 result was
very hard fought and the students
did themselves proud, not only in
their performance, but also in their
character and persistence. They
were commended by Graham Poll
for being a credit to the school.
Unfortunately, during this game we
lost Josh Hancock through injury.
The second fixture of the day saw
another 0-0 draw, with a Man of the
Match performance by Liam Win-
terbourne in goal. The boys spent
a large amount of time defending
and getting a point was a great
performance. After the final whistle
this was a very good point and put
us in a great position going in to the
third fixture. The last fixture of the
day saw us take a great three points
from a very good Abingdon youth
team. A goal apiece from Mitchell
McCann and Misha Lotto helped
to secure the 2-1 victory, giving
KEVICC a great platform ready for
the second day. The second day
started very well with a 3-0 victory
over Kenilworth Wardens with goals
from Jamie Warren, Misha Lotto and
an O.G. helping KEVICC to a superb
victory. Going in to the last fixture
the students knew they need a big
win to secure themselves a place
in the Final with only the top team
going through. They were up against
an undefeated Coldland Colts. This
was a very feisty affair and saw
some big tackles from both teams.
However, through all of the personal
battles across the pitch the students
conducted themselves impeccably
throughout and were an absolute
credit to the College. Daniel Gillard
