When we arrived in Plymouth, I felt
excited to be there and proud to be
representing KEVICC. When we went
into the kitchens, to begin with I
felt a tad nervous but with a hint
of adrenaline as all the waiting was
finally over. As soon as the cooking
started though, all the nervous
energy went and I was able to relax
a bit more and focus on the task in
hand. When I was cooking, it was
great because I was able to work
with my teammates Isabelle and
Reece to make our three course
meal. It was amazing to be given an
opportunity to do it and I would do it
again if I was asked to as I enjoyed
myself so much.

Team Challenge
The teams are selected from a
range of schools with applications
based on their choice of dishes and
knowledge of nutrition. Out of an
extensive range of schools, only ten
were selected to be in the final.
We were shown into our working
area and kitchen and given a safety
briefing. There were several rules that
we had to abide by. For example,
the starter had to include cottage
cheese; themain, salmon; the desert,
fresh pears. We were given two hours
to prepare, cook, bake and present
our dishes to the chosen judges; also
judging our dishes were two players
from Plymouth Raiders. Our meals
were judged and evaluated by all
four judges and the prizes were given
out. I found the day really enjoyable
because I got to meet lots of new
people and learn some exciting new
dishes. It was daunting going up
against the older years but it was
a really great day out and I would
recommend it to anyone wanting to
get involved with home economics.

Two year 9 students report on this
annual competition, run by Plym-
outh City College. Congratulations to
them for all their preparation for the
day and for being chosen to take part.
The Entrepreneurship Project went
really well for the fifteen students
who attended, and culminated in a
Dragons Den
scenario with KEVICC
judges Teresa Lakeman, Business
and Development Manager; Chris
Box, Head of IT and Senior Finance
Officer Marie Trant, supported by Bill
and Gary from Optimise4, who deliv-
ered the project.
They commented:
We were both very
pleased with this project; a big thank
you for this, and for the hospitality.
We were particularly impressed by
the quality and mature standard of
the presentations, which were both
engaging and informative, keeping
the audience captivated with their
ideas and propositions. There is no
doubt you have nurtured a number of
budding entrepreneurs who will hope-
fully go on to realise great achieve-
ments in their future careers.
The students really appreciated what
the project had taught them; the
main lesson being how to put togeth-
er a business plan and its importance.
They said:
I had a great two days and
am now looking forward to the men-
toring.
I now have the confidence and
knowledge that I could run my own
business.
I now know how a business
is structured.
Chris Box said:
It was great to be a
part of this project. The students had
clearly worked very hard preparing
their presentations. The depth of
knowledge displayed, especially with
regard to the financial projections
was inspiring. I came away with a
start- up business under my belt, and
some great talent on my team!
Teresa Lakeman added:
I thoroughly
enjoyed my time in the 'den' and was
hugely impressed with the range of
innovative business ideas presented
with skill by all of the students. A
particular word of praise, however,
for Yoran Sheppard, who announced
he had sacked his fellow directors
for lack of commitment (they had
actually gone to represent the College
in a football match) and then gave a
flawless presentation of the group's
business concept and won over the
whole panel.
A very heartfelt thank you to Bill
and Gary – what a fantastic learning
curve in just a couple of days! Do the
students realise how fortunate they
are to have had this opportunity? We
will have to follow them over the next
ten – fifteen years to find out!

Our Young Entrepreneurs
Year 9 Property Day
Year 9 students spent a hardworking
day finding out how complicated it is to
tender for the opportunity to develop a
piece of land for housing. Led by Yvonne
Paddon of the Devon Education Busi-
ness Partnership, the challenge taught
them about working as managers; as
architects; as surveyors; in finance; in
advertising and as a small team. They
worked on the project for an entire day, wrestling with enormous sums of
money, and not forgetting environmental concerns and the importance of
providing social housing. The day culminated with presentations from each
team and the winners were Homes4U: Katie Smaldon; Amelia Edwards; Ruby
Richards-Burns; Shania MacLening; Jasmine Huxter and Victoria Billis.
