Welcome all to the Summer issue of the Courier –
this is the first piece that I am writing for you all
as a new editor so I hope to be able to give you a
welcome introduction to this issue. By the time this is
published, all of the exams for both GCSE and A-level
should be over and the waiting period ensues; I wish
everyone the best of luck for the results day in August
and, whatever may happen, I encourage you all not
to worry but simply to strive forwards with renewed
determination along the path you have chosen for
yourselves.
We have many exciting things for you in this summer's Courier (as always!),
the first of which is the junior maths challenge – a special congratulations to Leo Espinosa and Mya Todd-Mir – and we also
have the Maths curriculum enrichment day. It's always encouraging to delve into subjects such as maths for creativity and
enthusiasm! In addition, I'm sure many of you have heard by now the results of our all important EU referendum – Britain
has decided to leave the European Union! Thank you to all of you who came to support our students at the EU debate that
we held, I'm sure this will be a very exciting time for all of us as Britain decides its next moves. We also have a collection of
poems produced by our year 7 students inspired by two of Shakespeare's plays; a detailed summary on our very successful
Sprung "extravaganza"; a piece on some of the Spanish poems our A-level students created and a piece on the programming
our year 7s have learned. The amazing games they have made are well worth a look! So delve in, and find out about all the
amazing things we've done this spring! Until the next time ...
The last edition of the Courier for this academic
year already? Where did the time go?!
As ever, the wealth of learning contained within
these pages gives an indication of how the
extraordinarily busy life of the College enables
months and terms to fly past so quickly. The
breadth of experiences for students at KEVICC is
clear from the following pages, and is testament to
the determination colleagues and students show
in working together to maintain an educational
experience that is more than a simply narrow
academic curriculum.
All our students’ achievements are important; completing the Ten Tors;
dragging themselves in every morning for GCSE revision breakfasts;
designing new balance/ pedal bike hybrids; gaining entry to prestigious
Art courses at Edinburgh University and so many others. Our thanks go
to all who have played their vital parts in these successes over the year –
the families and wider community who support our young people to keep
trying hard and take opportunities; the dedicated and hard-working staff
who work alongside students to ensure they achieve their potential and,
finally, the students themselves, who support one another so well, and who
constantly surprise and excite us with what they can achieve. Many thanks
to all, and enjoy your well-earned summer break!
Once again, we are at the wonderful time of year when
the entire school quietens with the departure of our
year 11s, meaning canteen queues become blissfully
short; teachers ease up on work, and the daunting
fear and realisation that they are now approaching
their GCSEs creeps up upon the current year 10s.
This last term has been a term for trips; wonderful
trips ranging all around subjects like art, history and
geography. I myself headed to London on a Drama
Department trip to watch
The Threepenny Opera
and
I can tell you that 40 students catching the Underground during rush hour
is one great experience (if you like being breathed on by strangers).
With the summer holidays finally in sight, and relief plain on every teachers'
face, students everywhere are turning from their work in anticipation and
excitement about whatever they have planned – whether it be heading
away to some exotic land, or just lying around watching a season a day in
a dark room until 5 September. And, of course, the year 7s are thrilled to
soon no longer be the youngest in the school, and those of us with younger
siblings on the way are looking forward to their arrival. So .. enjoy the long
days and warm nights of summer, even if it is damp!
