Student Achievement
Ten Tors Challenge 2016
KEVICC students succeeded in their challenge against Dartmoor in the 56th
year of the Ten Tors Challenge. This year (for the first time in several) the
weather was fine during training, and for the event. In fact, the weekend was
actually too nice as warm and sunny can be very depressing when you know
you are carrying all of your cold weather gear! Eighteen of our young people set
off amongst 2500 others and all eighteeen overcame the demands of what is a
physical, intellectual and psychological battle against the moor and yourself.
The year 11 students who completed 45 miles were Ross Upton, Jonty Coles,
Kit Cregan, Arthur White, Reuben Goulden and Michael Flanagan. Despite
exhortations from the staff, they ‘tore it up’ and were the leading group on
their route on the Saturday. They finished on Sunday at 11:42, which was a
very fast time.
The two 35 mile teams composed of year 10 students Rowan Hard, Dylan
Todd, Ed Coles, Danni Adams, Ewan Baker, Kai Rutherford, Diarmud Johnson,
Sam Goddard, Alice Letten, Daisy Bailey, Callum McGinnis and Fred Mudge,
and they also completed their routes in excellent time. They maintained an
unbroken streak of complete teams finishing that goes back as far as any of
the current training team can remember.
Over 30 students started out on this journey with training in College back in
January and, although only eighteen can take part, all of them are winners as
they have all showed commitment and have learned more about hill-walking
skills and, more importantly, about themselves and team work.
Finally, thanks must go out for all of the support given by parents, and to
the KEVICC staff and volunteers who have given their time freely to develop,
encourage and support our young people.

Duke of Edinurgh Award
The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme has seen
nineteen students take on the Bronze award and
one student take on the Gold award. Currently, the
students are doing very well and are all on course
to achieve their award. They are preparing for their
expedition and will very soon be taking on the hard
challenge of navigating their way around Dartmoor. The D of E award allows
students to gain recognition for all the hard work they are doing. The possible
activities that could be used are almost endless and give young people a
great opportunity to challenge themselves. For more information, talk to Mr
Gillard in the PE Department or visit

KEVICC student becomes a Devon & Cornwall
top scoring junior girl archer
Congratulations to Heidi Wakeley who, with Lily Howe, became the
highest scoring girl archers in Devon and Cornwall. They represent
Totnes Archers but both have excelled in their own right. The club
is very proud of them, and all their juniors.
Heidi is one of the founding members of Totnes Archers and has
competed for Totnes since 2012. She has set county records for
both Barebow and Longbow during her shooting career; her latest glory being top score
for the Junior Barebow category in the Devon & Cornwall winter leagues.
Although the juniors did not win their league this year, they gave a fantastic account of
themselves. Glory this year came to the two senior Totnes teams, topping both divisions
that they were involved in, and both gaining promotion.
To find out more about the Archery club, please see any member of the PE department.
