A Daily Cuppa For You ...
This year's KEVICC-hosted Fairtrade
Primary Schools Conference challenged
and evoked thought into Fairtrade
practice. Year 5 pupils from Marldon, St
Johns and The Grove joined KEVICC in
sitting back sipping tea and discussing
pressing issues surrounding Fairtrade.

Re-invent Innovation Day
Teams from Berry Pomeroy and Stoke Gabriel Primary
schools recently participated in an all-day design
challenge. The small teams were asked to design a new
product that could be sold to members of the public.
Students were awarded marks by KEVICC year 10
students for their creativity, model making, teamwork
and presentations. Ideas presented ranged from large
scale egg timers that would go on a kitchen wall and be
inverted to go again, to light and lampshade concepts
that re-used milk containers, and books to bird houses
and storage devices.
Later, all the groups had five minutes to pitch their
design solutions to the judges, who were amazed at
the brilliance and variety of ideas. The winning team,
with pupils from both schools working collaboratively,
presented a concept for a light fitting based on the re-
deployment of old books.

3D Printing Project
Diptford Primary School's year 5 and 6s have been
working in the Design and Technology Department
developing 3D designs that will soon be printed using
the College’s 3D print facilities. Children began by
designing egg cup concepts, and initially undertook a
research and mathematical analysis of common egg
sizes so that they could scale their ideas. Having come
up with a diverse and creative range of solutions all the
students drew out their designs on 3D computer-aided
design software and developed branding for their new
company. Soon, the College is taking delivery of five
new three-dimensional printers having received funding
from Devon County Council to develop enterprise and
CAD/CAM in primary schools, at secondary level and at
the community Fab Lab based at the College.
During February and March, the designs will be printed
out, and a small three-dimensional printer loaned to
Diptford Primary school so that more students can see
the designs beingmanufactured. InMay, it is hoped that
the pieces will form part of the Design and Technology
Departments annual exhibition in the Ariel Gallery.
Paul Tiony, tea producer from Kenya,
spent amorning at KEVICC explaining to
year 5 children fromMarldon, St. John's
and The Grove how tea is transfomed
from a leaf to tea in our cups, and about
tea growing worldwide. The children
left determined to promote the use of
Fairtrade at home and in their schools.
Celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight with year 5s
Paul was accompanied by Totnes
Mayor, Jaqui Hodgson, who explained
to the children that Totnes is a Fairtrade
Town. They answered quizzes; made
posters; asked Paul searching questions
about production; wages and working
conditions in his company and entered
tea pot designs in a competition.
